From afar, the memorial reads as a solid block of stone. Inside, it becomes a contemplative field of soaring columns and narrow passages. Smooth inner faces bear the names of Bartholomew County residents lost in 20th‑century wars, along with excerpts from their letters and diaries.

Selected through a national competition. Received the Boston Society of Architects Unbuilt Architecture Design Award (1996). Dedicated in 1997.

Maryann Thompson is known for contemplative, materially sensitive architecture. Her design balances monumental scale with intimate, personal reflection.
