Designed by I. M. Pei in 1969, this brick pavilion uses strong horizontal and geometric elements to relate to nearby First Christian Church and the Irwin House. Inside, coffered concrete ceilings frame inset lights, and the design integrates brick, concrete, and limestone throughout. Pei designed the library to “be in conversation with” Eliel Saarinen's First Christian Church, Columbus’ first modern building, directly across the street. The adjoining Library Plaza became Columbus’s first true civic gathering space, continuing today as a hub for concerts, art fairs, and community events. The library plaza is home to one of Columbus’ most significant public artworks, Large Arch by Henry Moore.
