Fire Station 5 is composed of two overlapping squares with forms that subtly reference barns and silos. It holds national significance as the first firehouse in the U.S. designed to integrate women firefighters, replacing dormitory-style sleeping with individual rooms and shifting social space to the kitchen. Torre’s feminist approach to architecture made the building a model for stations across the country.
