1957
Designed by architect Eero Saarinen, with interiors by Alexander Girard, and landscape by Dan Kiley, the house exemplifies the international Modernist style with its open, flowing layout, flat roof, and floor-to-ceiling glass walls. A grid of skylights supported by sleek steel columns fills the interiors with natural light, highlighting Girard’s bold textiles and playful patterns.
Outside, Kiley’s landscape design mirrors the home’s geometric clarity, with large garden rooms and an iconic allée of honey locust trees running along the west side of the property. This integration of house and landscape creates a one-of-a-kind experience that captures the spirit of midcentury modernism.
Designated a National Historic Landmark in 2000—while still occupied by the Miller family—Miller House and Garden remains one of the nation’s most important midcentury residences.
