The Republic building used glass and steel to embody transparency and community connection, with street-facing printing presses once visible to the public. Goldsmith, a protégé of Mies van der Rohe, pursued a vision of structural clarity and modesty in design. The building played a central role in Columbus’s downtown redevelopment and received an AIA Honor Award in 1975 before being named a National Historic Landmark in 2012. Since 2018, it has housed Indiana University’s J. Irwin Miller Architecture Program.
