Stanley Saitowitz is associated in Columbus, Indiana, with the architectural structures at Mill Race Park, created in collaboration with landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburgh. Rather than designing a single building, Saitowitz developed a family of small-scale park structures—often described as follies—that give the park its distinctive architectural identity, including the observation tower, boathouse, river lookout, fishing pier, amphitheater stage, arbor, restrooms, and picnic shelters. Known for a rigorous modernism shaped by geometry, movement, and material clarity, Saitowitz has combined architectural practice with a long teaching career. He is Professor Emeritus of Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley. His honors include the Henry Bacon Medal for the New England Holocaust Memorial and the Harleston Parker Medal, Boston’s highest architectural award.
