Simmons School is a restored one-room schoolhouse that offers a glimpse into early education in Bartholomew County and Hawcreek Township. Located near Hope, Indiana, the school’s original site was deeded to the county in 1837, beginning with a log school before being replaced by the brick structure believed to have been built around 1879. The school served local students until 1907, when township students were moved to Hawcreek Central School. After years of varied use and deterioration, the building was restored as a historic educational site, complete with its original bell donated by the Simmons family. Today, Simmons School preserves the spirit of the one-room school era and welcomes visitors to experience a meaningful piece of local history.
