Eero Saarinen is associated in Columbus, Indiana, with the Miller House and Garden, the former Irwin Union Bank and Trust Company, and North Christian Church. A Finnish American architect and designer, Saarinen emerged as one of the most influential figures in postwar modernism after winning the 1948 competition for the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, later known as the Gateway Arch. In Columbus, his work ranges from the intimate domestic setting of the Miller House to the open, glass-walled bank and the dramatic hexagonal form of North Christian Church, his last church design. Saarinen also designed furniture and interiors, bringing the same sculptural clarity to objects such as his Knoll seating as he did to his buildings.
