Robert Venturi is associated in Columbus, Indiana, with Fire Station No. 4, designed in 1967 and completed in 1968. A founding principal of Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates, Venturi was one of the most influential architects of the twentieth century, helping define postmodern architecture through both his buildings and his writing. In Columbus, Fire Station No. 4 is considered one of his earliest completed projects and a landmark example of postmodern design, combining an ordinary utilitarian program with bold formal gestures, including its trapezoidal plan and prominent hose-drying tower. Venturi studied at Princeton University and later worked in Philadelphia, where he and Denise Scott Brown helped reshape how architects and planners think about everyday buildings, symbolism, and the built environment. His major honors include the 1991 Pritzker Architecture Prize and, with Scott Brown, the 2016 AIA Gold Medal.
